Sometimes, the things we think are standing in our way are actually pushing us toward God’s desires for our lives. If you find yourself in a similar situation, try to think that God has given you exactly what you need to endure and manage the challenge you’re facing.

For me, God gave me Kelly.

Unfortunately, while I couldn’t talk about the investigation, other people could. Many reporters, picking up the rumor of the investigation, ran with the story and the idea that “Scott Drew and the Baylor Baptists were cheaters.”

Now, no one likes being called names, especially if it means having your reputation and your integrity questioned. But one thing my wife and the coaches on our staff helped me keep in mind was that these people out there writing negative things about us didn’t really know us.

One guy wrote an article that said, “Scott Drew walks around with a Bible in one hand and money for recruits in the other.”

It wasn’t true, of course, but it didn’t make it easier to read. To most of the reporters’ credit, whenever they wrote something like that, I would call them and just say, “Hey—we don’t know each other,” and try to give them some accurate information as far as I could.

Mostly, they were receptive, and even if they didn’t walk back what they wrote, they would at least know next time where we were coming from. You can’t control other people, but you can control the way you react and respond to them. Not that it was always easy.

Grant McCasland was the head coach at a Division II school in Wichita Falls, Texas, and he had previously coached at a junior college in Midland. He’d also played basketball at Baylor in the late nineties.

When I first started reaching out to Coach McCasland, he was hesitant. He had heard from a few different coaches that we were cheating to get the players we were.

“Don’t do it,” several experienced Division I coaches told Coach McCasland. “You’ll ruin your career.”

Luckily, Coach McCasland was willing to talk with our staff, and I guess he liked what he heard. I also spent a lot of time talking to him. That’s one thing about me—the more you tell me no, the more I want to work to get you to change your mind. I knew the rumors about us were out there, not just in the media but among some rival coaches. I mean, coaches are just like anyone else. When they get together, they’re going to talk, and they’re probably going to talk about the person who isn’t there. As a
